Kanzan from Renyo-sho: Far From the Lotus
Choreographer, director, music composer Tomoe Shizune
Butoh dancer Kagaya Sanae of Tomoe Shizune & Hakutobo
Butoh is a modern stage art deeply rooted in the Japanese world view and culture. The principles of its physical expression are based on the idea of funi. Funi means ‘two things are one’ and is a philosophy that embraces contradiction. Nature and man, heart and body, this and the other world, death and life – all of these pairings can be seen as one thing. Through physical expression Kagaya Sanae shares with the audience the beauty, joy and rhythm of the soul. In this stage work Kagaya performs a Buddha standing on the side of the road and an ogre’s child.
